How to Make a Killer First Impression

Most people will judge you within the first  second of meeting you, and their opinion will most likely never change. Making a  good first impression is incredibly important because you only get one shot at  it.

Princeton University psychologist Alex Todorov and coauthor Janine Willis, a student  researcher who graduated from Princeton in 2005, had people look at a  microsecond of video of a political candidate. Amazingly, research subjects  could predict with 70-percent accuracy who would win the electionjust ...

When spouses clash over Christmas

When spouses clash over Christmas

(CNN) — The tree is twinkling, carolers are singing, eggnog is flowing and your spouse is … hunkered down in the other room, counting the seconds until the season is over. Can’t he or she just suck it up and make with the merry? After all, who doesn’t love the holidays?

Plenty of folks, to their yearly consternation, find themselves in mixed humbug/holly-jolly relationships. It can prove to be a great stressor to those on both sides of the holiday celebration ...

A Tablet Shopping Revolution

When Joaquin Ruiz first saw the technical specs  for Apple’s first iPad, the engineer by training knew that it was not only a  revelation in how easily we interact with computers—it was a coup for  e-commerce.

For all of its conveniences, online shopping has still meant sitting rigidly  in front of a desktop computer as if you are at work, or awkwardly balancing a  laptop from a perch on the living-room couch. Tablets, on the other hand, are  light, easy to ...

Tiger’s back? Nike hopes so

Tiger’s back? Nike hopes so

It’s been a long time since Nike Inc. and Tiger Woods had something they could celebrate together.

So naturally, our friendly, neighborhood sporting goods giant heralded Woods’ victory Sunday at the Chevron World Challenge — his first since struck by personal scandal two years ago — with such words as “electrifying,” saying his victory came in “a stunning dramatic ‘Tiger-like’ fashion.”

Exactly what “Tiger-like” represents these days is an open question, given Woods’ performance in these two years ...

Ido Leffler is among those who think now is the best of  times for entrepreneurs.

The cofounder of the world’s second-largest  brand of natural beauty products, Ido Leffler, of Yes To Carrots, minced no words about the  opportunity for entrepreneurs in the worst economy in a generation.

“There has never been a better time to do business in the United States than  right now,” Leffler, 34, told a gathering of New York entrepreneurs and students  from around ...

Venezuelan Cops Rescue Kidnapped Nats Catcher

CARACAS, Venezuela – The kidnapping ordeal of Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos ended after two days when Venezuelan police commandos swooped in to rescue him in a flurry of gunfire and arrested five alleged abductors.

Ramos said he was happy and thankful to be alive, and that the final moments had been hair-raising as police and the kidnappers exchanged heavy fire in the remote mountainous area where he was being held.

“The truth is I’m still very nervous, but thanks to God ...

Wall Street’s 1 Percent Has Money Troubles Too!

Here’s a story that should cheer the 99 percent:  The 1 percent—i.e. all those Wall Street bankers—are expected to see their  bonuses slashed by as much as 30 percent on average this year, according to  reports in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

The biggest hit will come to those who work in trading and investment  banking, two areas that have been hard hit through the continued economic  downturn. The bonus information is based ...

Yelp Hopes for Groupon Effect

The appetite for risk appears to be coming back to Wall
Street. At least that’s what companies such as Yelp, which are planning initial
public offerings, hope.
